Project C7: Retreat of the State from Entrepreneurial Activities: Privatization Policy and Cutback of Subsidies in OECD countries, 1980-2010

Project director   Obinger, Herbert
Traub, Stefan

In its third phase, the project C7 examines the consequences of the retreat of the state from entrepreneurial activities in the form of privatization, (de-)regulation, and the cutback of subsidies for a sample of 21 OECD countries in the period 1980-2010.

The quantitative empirical analysis focuses on the efficiency effects and distributional effects (outcomes) accompanied by the retreat of the entrepreneurial state. In addition, the reactions (Exit, Voice, Loyalty) of collective political actors (political parties, trade unions) and market participants (firms and citizens) to the transformation of the entrepreneurial state are investigated. The consequences of privatization, regulation and subsidy cuts will be analyzed at the macroeconomic level and in the sectors railways, telecommunications, coal mining and steel production.

The analysis is driven by a set of politico-economic theories, employs different econometric techniques, and uses data from the project's REST database (REST = Retreat of the State from Entrepreneurial Activities):
